Now, your infrastructure is falling to pieces under your feet, and as citizens you are responsible for crudities like closing parks, and inhumanities like closing battered women’s shelters. It’s outrageous, inexcusable, that you can’t get into the courses you need, but much worse that Oakland police have stopped taking 911 calls for burglaries and runaway children. If you read what your elected officials say about the state today, you’ll see things like “California can’t afford” this or that basic government function, and that “we need to make hard choices” to shut down one or another public service, or starve it even more (like your university). Can’t afford? The budget deficit that’s paralyzing Sacramento is about $500 per person; add another $500 to get back to a public sector we don’t have to be ashamed of, and our average income is almost forty times that. Of course we can afford a government that actually works: the fact is that your parents have simply chosen not to have it.

That’s Judi Sheppard Missett, inventor of JAZZERCISE, and if SNL did a sketch about her using the JAZZERCISE name there’s a decent chance she’d sue; Judi Sheppard Missett is extremely protective of the JAZZERCISE brand. Honestly I’m surprised anything JAZZERCISE-related is on YouTube at all, considering how extensive her copyrights are.

Also: whenever you read, say, or think JAZZERCISE, you have to imagine the big serif-y logo with the stars dotting the j and the i, like this.

Ask me sometime about having to perform JAZZERCISE routines on stage at a park during my little town’s annual summertime Flower Festival. JAZZERCISE got a top spot (1 on Saturday afternoon, right after the parade!) because the demos were so popular! Of course now I realize it was because it was, you know, this video but with more ladies, which people love to watch! But as a 10-year-old whose mother insisted on her participation despite her repeated protests (in massive-screaming-fit form)? It totally puzzled me why anyone watched. I had to watch all the time and it was THE WORST.

The American government has its human aspects—it is staffed by human beings, mostly—but its atomized, at-odds-with-itself legislative structure (House and Senate, each with its arcane rules, its semi-feudal committee chairs, and its independently elected members, none of whom are accountable or fully responsible for outcomes) makes it more like an inanimate object. In our sclerotic lawmaking process, it is not enough that the President, a majority of both Houses of Congress, and a majority of the voters at the last election favor extending health care to all citizens.
The left-wing critics are right about the conspicuous flaws of the pending health-care reform—its lack of even a weak “public option,” its too meagre subsidies, its windfalls for Big Pharma, its capitulation on abortion coverage, its reliance on private insurance. And there are surely senators and representatives whose motives are base or, broadly speaking, corrupt. But it is nonsense to attribute the less than fully satisfactory result to the alleged perfidy of the President or “the Democrats.” The critics’ indignation would be better directed at what an earlier generation of malcontents called “the system”—starting, perhaps, with the Senate’s filibuster rule, an inanimate object if there ever was one.”

Some of my lefty loved ones have been so frustrated with Obama and the Democratic leadership of late. I’ve been having a hard time articulating that I when I don’t exactly agree with them it’s not because I am satisfied with the current state of things, but because I think they are let down by a “failure” where “success” was never an attainable construct.

Much like Moose and Squirrel, Tintin was a big childhood favorite. I was disappointed last year to find the “Tintin museum” in Bruges, Belgium to be kind of a cheesy souvenir shop.
