"Both the uniqueness and the integrity of the artifact are in jeopardy because, left to itself, the facsimile tends to supplant and then destroy the original. Already, in the highly developed countries of the West, this process has advanced far enough that a new generation is among us whose aesthetic experience and hence aesthetic judgment are based upon private contact with duplicate and facsimile, rather than upon public participation in the exposure to great originals. Such a development…can lead only to the impoverishment of the sensual and aesthetic life of each individual and a drastic alteration in the tone of the entire culture."
