The New Pornographers - The Laws Have Changed

I was surprised at the seemingly low energy around the city this morning; on the train, on the sidewalks, everyone seems drained and docile. Probably just hungover, without a drop of celebration left in us. Or maybe sheer elation has been tempered with disappointment at the ass-backwardness of the passage of Prop 8 (how, when more progressive measures passed easily with big margins?) But then I walked into my office building, where lawyers and real estate brokers and insurance drones spend the days, in staid dress and moderate politics surrounded by beige and inside voices, as a professionally dressed middle aged white woman shrieked and bounded across the lobby to embrace our grinning, brimming security guard (an African-American woman of about 40) and they hugged and cried and again, as last night, I was awash in the jubilation of restored faith and the excitement of possibility. I don’t know how I’m going to keep it together today.

Rejoice!
