Mad Men Footnotes is my new favorite blog.
madmenfootnotes:

The key to allowing men into the delivery room was held by French obstetrician, Dr. Lamaze.
Lamaze classes became popular in the US during the late 1960’s. This was due in part to the bourgeoning sense of egalitarianism, thanks to the Civil Rights movement, and the publication of Marjorie Karmel’s book Thank You, Dr. Lamaze. Lamaze is more than a breathing excercise, it’s an ideology that emphasizes the organic nature of childbirth. It advocates that women should feel as relaxed as possible during labor and are entitled to a birth without medical intervention.
The Lamaze breathing technique also requires  a partner (originally a midwife). During the Civil Rights movement and the Women’s Lib movement, more and more men signed up for classes with their ladies and were eventually seen as helpful partners rather than meddlesome outsiders.
